The Significance of World Day of Social Justice



The United Nations' (UN) World Day of Social Justice is annually observed on February 20 to encourage people to look at how social justice affects poverty eradication. It also focuses on the goal of achieving full employment and support for social integration.


The theme for World Day of Social Justice 2021 is 'A Call for Social Justice in the Digital Economy'. According to the United Nations, the digital economy is transforming the world through expansion in broadband connectivity, cloud computing, and data.


Social justice refers to equal opportunities, distribution of wealth, healthcare facilities and privileges within a society. Social justice also includes human rights and looking after people who have historically faced discrimination based on race, religion, sex and economic background.


The concept of social justice first emerged in the 19th century when the wide disparities in wealth and amenities perpetuated through the social structure of the times. During the Industrial Revolution, philosophers and activists first attempted to promote equality and stop the exploitation of marginalized people.


We can't ignore the fact that Social injustice is an important principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. To remove the barriers basically that people face about gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability, etc. it is necessary to uphold the principles of social justice.


This day is celebrated with the objective of raising your voice against social injustice that is to promote social justice and to bring the various communities internationally together to eliminate poverty, gender, and physical discrimination, illiteracy, religious discrimination, etc. to make a socially integrated society.
