World Toilet Day and Its Significance

World Toilet Day is eventfully observed on November 19th around the world. To maintain the decorum of our resource management services and manage the Earth by tolerating pollution, we have to address a very critical issue – sanitation and building toilets. Every country faces social, economic, and environmental challenges in maintaining good sanitation infrastructure.

This year, World Toilet Day focuses on ‘sustainable sanitation and climate change’, according to United Nations Water, the official convener of this day. Sustainable sanitation is both, socially acceptable and economically viable, that is, it can keep communities healthy and withstand climate change. It reuses waste to safely boost agriculture, and reduce and capture emissions for greener energy.

All across the globe, almost 4.2 billion people manage their life without proper and safe sanitation and over 673 million people are indulged in the practice of open defecation. Toilets impact positively on human dignity, public health, and hygiene, safety (especially for women), but it also ensures that diseases don’t spread in society. There are several diseases that one can be infected with, such as cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, and dysentery.

World Toilet Day puts things and problems into perspective. Its objective is to inspire people around the world to act and do their bit in eradicating this social cause.
