World Day Against Child Labor 2022 and Its Significance

Every year on June 12 World Day Against Child Labor is witnessed to foster a consciousness of the plight of child laborers worldwide. Hundreds of millions of girls and boys around the world are affected.

The theme of this year is "Universal Social Protection to End Child Labour". It addressed increasing investment in social protection systems and schemes to establish solid social protection floors and protect children from child labor.

In 2011, there were an estimated 215 million child laborers in the world - 115 million of which were involved in hazardous work. To combat child labor around the world the International Labour Organization (ILO) initiated the World Day Against Child Labor in 2002.

According to the UN Child labor remains a substantial issue, with approximately 72 million working children denied education, safe working conditions, and fair pay. In some of the least developed countries, it is estimated that up to one in four children are working in conditions detrimental to their health and development.

June 12 is nominated as World Day Against Child Labor to draw consciousness to the international issue of child labor and to develop solutions to end it. The day is observed to raise knowledge about the undesirable mental and physical concerns that children who are pushed into child labor endure across the world. The day also serves as a chance for individuals to create effective tools to tackle the causes that contribute to child labor.

Child labor harms children mentally, physically, socially, and morally. It interferes with their schooling, preventing them from attending or concentrating. It may involve them being enslaved, separated from their families, and exposed to serious hazards and illnesses.

The prevalence of child labor can be reduced by abolishing poverty. Many countries have banned child labor in their constitutions. Each government should raise public consciousness to rehabilitate working children and bring them back to school. All child laborers need to be brought to the forefront of their lives to overcome the potential dangers of the country in the future.
